Making Christmas Magic in July (and All Year Long)

What if Christmas Magic wasn’t tied to a date on the calendar?
What if it were something you could create anytime—with just a smile?

That’s exactly what Santa John and I have been sharing this month during our Christmas in July storytimes. When we step into a library, classroom, or family event, we’re not just reading books—we’re on a mission from the North Pole:

🎄 To check on the Christmas Magic at locations all over.

Shifting from Fear to Smiles

You see, we’re helping families shift from the old “Naughty or Nice” list to something much more powerful—teaching children that they build Christmas Magic through kindness, generosity, wonder, and love—all year long. That’s what Santa is really looking for.

And the kids? They love it.

We carry a special tool to show them the Magic in action: a glowing Christmas Magic Meter made from a circular purse with programmable lights. First, we ask the children to remember fun times–times someone was kind to them, a time when they were helpful to others. At each recollection, the lights begin to glow—one by one—until the whole thing sparkles.

Once they understand how Christmas Magic works, we ask them how they can create more Christmas Magic. Their responses are perfect:

🌟 Smile at someone.
🌟 Sing a happy song.
🌟 Share something.
🌟 Say something kind.

This is positive parenting in action: guiding children toward values, not fear. Helping them feel capable of creating good in the world—and recognizing the joy it brings.

Creating Christmas Magic at Any Time

And it’s not just for December.
The Magic Meter works just as well in July, on rainy days, during bedtime routines, or in the middle of school mornings.

That’s why we created The Christmas Magic Meter book, a mobile app, and printable activity cards—to help families make Christmas Magic year-round.

You’re already part of this story now.
Let’s keep the Magic growing—one kind moment at a time.

When Kids Ask Santa Hard Questions

When children bring Santa their hardest questions, they often seek to understand a loss of connection—be it through death, absence, or illness. In those moments, Santa’s role transcends delivering perfect answers; it’s about being present and helping the child feel connected again, even if just for a moment. Many Santas discover that the most meaningful interactions come not from rehearsed lines, but from pausing, listening, and responding with kindness. Join us at the Santa Legacy Workshop to explore how to navigate these profound conversations and make a lasting impact in the lives of children.

When Santa’s Magic Feels Thin

Losing the feeling of magic doesn’t mean you’ve lost the magic.
More often, it means you’ve been giving more than you’ve been replenishing.

It isn’t just the performance —
it’s the emotional labor.
The energy it takes to be fully present.
The way even rest can stop feeling like rest when you’re holding yourself in reserve.

If this season left you feeling stretched, quieter, or wondering why the magic didn’t feel the same—this reflection is for you.

You haven’t lost your calling.
You haven’t lost your heart.
You’re being invited to tend the part of the magic that lives inside you.
